Cranial Remolding

About Helmet Therapy

Helmet therapy, also known as cranial remolding, is a non-invasive treatment option for infants with plagiocephaly, brachycephaly, or other cranial asymmetries. Our experienced team of orthotists, serving the Durham Region, Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Clarington and Northumberland County, specialize in designing custom helmets that help redirect growth and restore cranial symmetry. Using 3D scanning technology, we capture an accurate digital representation of your baby’s head shape, ensuring a tailored fit and optimal treatment outcomes. Our lightweight helmets are crafted with precision and can be adjusted as your baby grows. With our commitment to helmet therapy, we strive to promote healthy cranial development and improve your child’s overall well-being. Throughout the process, our dedicated staff will guide you from assessment to treatment, ensuring the best possible outcome for your little one.

Helmet Therapy FAQs

  • How much does helmet therapy cost?
The cost of helmet therapy for the first 6 months is $2600. Most major insurance plans cover a portion of helmet therapy. OHIP does not offer funding for this treatment method.
  • How long does the helmet have to be worn?
Helmet therapy has been shown to be most effective when worn for 23 hours per day. The duration of helmet therapy is approximately 3 to 4 months depending on the severity of cranial asymmetry.
  • Is my child a candidate for helmet therapy?
Helmet therapy is typically indicated for children between the ages of 5 to 12 months. Depending on the age of your child and the severity of the cranial asymmetry, your doctor may recommend repositioning therapy prior to pursuing cranial remolding.
  • What causes plagiocephaly and brachycephaly?
Plagiocephaly and brachycephaly have various causes. Plagiocephaly, characterized by a flat spot on one side of the baby’s head, can result from factors such as prolonged pressure, positioning in the womb, or tight neck muscles (torticollis). Brachycephaly, involving a flattening at the back of the head, can be caused by similar factors.
  • Are follow-up appointments required?
Multiple follow-up appointments are required in order to monitor the progression of head shape. Follow-up appointments also ensure that issues related to helmet fit can be addressed routinely. Follow-up appointments are at no additional cost.
